I recently participated in a live video-conference discussing Dr. Hart’s book “Trouble I’ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism (https://www.amazon.com/Trouble-Ive-Seen-Changing-Church/dp/1513800000).
We had a class of disparate people of this country, representing (at least) three Christian faith communities, and we talked about the essentials of Dr. Hart’s book.
I came away with great encouragement, especially by a pastor from an urban congregation, who reminded us that the key to understanding what is going on here and what needs to be changed is not just social action (good as that is) but the resurrected, powerful Jesus who transforms lives.
It was a solace and a reminder that what we are attempting to do–to understand and overcome racism–isn’t just an exercise in philosophy or a push for our way of doing things versus their way.
It is about being the kind of people Jesus wants us to be.
I’m looking forward to the next conference.
