Waking Up White, Introduction

Debby Irving mentions her childhood in a privileged New England family. An interesting article was posted Thursday by the New Bedford Historical Society, about Black Native American whaling captains. Notice the reference to Moby Dick. Interesting, nearly 1600 whaling trips originated at Martha’s Vineyard from 1715 to 1928.

A Black Native American friend of ours descends from the Algonquin who met the pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620. He married a white friend of ours of Danish heritage. He also has Navajo heritage. Both have been Baha’is for almost 50 years.

About David Carlson

Our house at Little Marais, MN is 140 feet from the North Shore of Lake Superior, built on a glacial beach elevated about 35 feet above the water. Our boathouse was converted to a cabin, and has a weather station on the roof. An old garage 200 feet from shore has another Weather Station to record down slope northwest winds from the Superior Ridge, a slope of 800 feet over 3 miles. I report daily weather observations to the MN State Climatology Office, and to CoCoRaHS at the National Weather Service in Duluth. I have a graduate certificate in Meteorological Engineering from Oklahoma University, 1969. I was an Air Force Weather Officer from 1969-73. My 50th class reunion meets at Macalester College in St. Paul this June 2018. I earned a bachelors degree in Economics. I retired from 3M in 2001 after 28 years service in International Logistics and Supply Chain Management. My retirement job for ten years was as Minnesota Historical Society, Split Rock Lighthouse Historic Site Interpreter (tour guide). My wife Denise and I worked there until the Centennial year in 2010.
