My Life in Music: Day 6

Hand-drawn music of the song "Love Song"

The spinning world stops

I was given the task by a friend of choosing 10 songs that greatly influenced me. I will post one song per day, for 10 consecutive days. Each song draws the picture more clearly, showing what has inspired me or just given me solace.

Today is “A Love Song,” from the group Love Song.

I was a teenager in Southern California. Like teenagers everywhere, I knew everything and knew nothing. (Please. I’ve grown a little since then. I still know nothing but I’ve stopped believing I know everything — on my good days.)

But I was in the moment living during what later became called the “Jesus Movement,” a new thing that erupted among the unwashed, undisciplined, hedonistic, sometimes aimless “hippies” and surfers and the scruffy people on the margins. Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, once a tiny church of a few dozen members, became one of the centers of the movement, and they used music as a tool to reach the hippies and surfers and those on the margins.

They had bands rising up among the people who collected themselves. Mustard Seed Faith. Debby Kerner/Ernie Retino. Gentle Faith. Children of the Day. Later Daniel Amos.

One of them specially appealed to me: Love Song and their eponymous work “A Love Song.”

It was a simple arrangement and simple words, but it spoke to me back then, and speaks to me now.

It was a moment in time. And like all moments it has passed. But in the moment, it was all I needed to hear and see and believe.

Album: Love Song

Lend an ear to a love song
Oooh a love song
Let it take you, let it start

What can you hear in a love song?
If you can feel it,
Then you’re feelin’ from the heart

All the emotions true feelings of life
is what music of love is about
If you are listening with peace in your heart
and no doubt
